A Moment of Reflection

A Moment of Deep Reflection

Greetings Little Sun People Family and Friends,

We know of your interest in our unique and wonderful Black child centered community institution known as LSP and we’re so happy to have you on our team.

Your support, love, care, encouragement, attention, and fight for us over the almost 43 years of Little Sun People’s existence has kept us strong and our doors open through all the many ups and downs faced by most (if not all) small Black businesses.  In a landscape where more than 86% of Black businesses fail, you have been there and that’s why we’re still here.

As you can probably hear in my tone, friends, I’m in a moment of deep reflection. In less than 8 months, I’ll step down from leadership of LSP.  Forty-three years ago, I had no real idea of what my decision to start a preschool that would reflect, honor, and tell the story of Black people from around the world and through the lens and the perspectives of Marcus Garvey, Harriet Tubman, Malcolm X, Zora Neale Hurston, Kwame Nkrumah and Queen Tiye (just to name a few) would eventually mean.  Now I get to begin taking a step back and to look at my, and our, work and to feel pleased. I am filled with gratitude and love just because I’ve had this chance to do such honorable work over this many years.

I’m proud to say that Little Sun People is not only surviving, but it’s thriving heading into its 5th decade.

The 2023-24 School Year
Our 2023-2024 school year started off with the warmth and welcoming first day of school where all parents were treated to a delicious breakfast and an invitation to join their child’s class and stay for the day.  The event started a little slowly because so often parents aren’t welcomed into schools unless it’s for fundraising or some other sort of work, but this was a day of welcome, connection, and really getting to know one another.  As soon as we really began to break bread together and enjoy the delicious meal, everyone settled down, felt comfortable, and the conversations and laughter began.  It was a great first day of school, we called it: Family Gathering.

Since that day, we have been on our path, building the Little Sun People community for this school year, welcoming and honoring each child and their family individually and as an integral part of our beautiful community.  We have  been Integrating our enrichment classes into our daily curriculum — welcoming Baba Fanzy teaching African dance and drum, Mama Tandra teaching violin, Master Sabu teaching martial arts, Baba Norman teaching chess, and Mama Pat teaching Swahili.  And one of the most important things that we, as a teaching team of leaders, will always do is to carefully infuse a  glorious piece of the African story into every cognitive lesson that we impart to our students.

I truly look forward to being with you every step of the way as I work through my final year as Executive Director and take my place in the wings where I will always be for Little Sun People no matter what. - Mama Fela

Harvest Fest Celebration and Dress-up Party

On Friday, October 27, 2023 we celebrated the changing seasons at our Harvest Fest Celebration and Dress-up Party. This joyous and festive event was open to our wonderful Little Sun People friennds and family, and togeher we laughed, learned, and made some unforgettable memories.

At Little Sun People, we believe in unity, diversity, and celebrating the rich cultures that shape our world. This Harvest Fest was an opportunity for us to come together in a spirit of togetherness, strengthening the bonds that make our community so special.

Umoja Karamu
Unity & Family Feast

At Little Sun People, we cherish the traditions that bring us together and celebrate our rich cultural heritage. One such tradition that holds a special place in our hearts is Umoja Karamu, a Swahili phrase that means "unity feast."

Umoja Karamu is a meaningful observance that emphasizes unity, self-determination, and reflection. This special occasion allows us to come together as a community to honor our African heritage and history. It's a time to share stories, delicious food, and engage in discussions that strengthen our bonds.

As we gather around the table, we are reminded of the importance of unity and the power of community in shaping our future. Little Sun People invites you to join us in the spirit of Umoja Karamu, as we celebrate our shared journey and the diversity that enriches our lives.
